Call Script

My name is __________. I am a constituent, and my zip code is _______. I am a member of Indivisible SF.

I am calling to ask you to demand that the Trump Administration stop returning immigrants to governments with oppressive and deadly regimes. Specifically, I am asking that Iranian detainees not be deported back to Iran while the country is in a state of great unrest and while residents are being murdered in large numbers by their government in order to quell the massive protests which are taking place in the country.

I am especially concerned about the return of two gay men who sought asylum in the US to escape persecution. If they are returned to Iran they will be arrested upon landing and sentenced to death for the simple reason that they are gay. Thank you for your support.

Background

Iran is currently in a state of unrest as the government tries to quell mass demonstrations which have been happening daily as the Iranian people demand freedom of speech and choice. The Iranian people want to be able to have demonstrations in the streets without being terrorized and killed by their own government. This is straight out of the fascist playbook.

Trump recently promised that the US would intervene if the killings continued in order to protect the Iranian citizens. He even had the audacity to make this announcement at a time when our own government is injuring, abducting, and murdering immigrants and citizens daily on American streets. Just like the people of Iran fighting for their rights, we US citizens and residents have a first amendment right to protest and the Trump administration is doing everything they can to consolidate power and take away these rights.

It is unacceptable hypocrisy that our government would claim to want to protect Iranian people, when they can consider returning any of the dozens of people they intend to put on that deportation flight to Iran. Many of these people immigrated here seeking asylum, to escape a tyrannical government. These deportations would never have happened in a previous administration and doing so now would be immoral and breaking a promise our government made to them when it originally granted them asylum in the US.

Among them, the situation is especially dire for the two gay men. Their attorney has not made the identities of them public so that they might have a chance to avoid arrest when they touch down in Iran. But this really won’t matter as the US must provide a manifest naming the deportees on board the flight. The Iranian government is aware that the two men identify as gay and it is almost certain that they will be arrested immediately upon deboarding the plane, be imprisoned, put on trial and ultimately sentenced to death.

We ask that you contact your congressional representatives and demand that our Department of Homeland Security grant the men asylum and allow them to remain in the United States.
