The new National Security Strategy recently released by the White House reeks of a new era of colonialism in Latin America, and financial corruption, appeasement of authoritarian governments, weakening of NATO, and abandoning Ukraine.

We urge you to:

  • Fiercely oppose military intervention that violates the War Powers Act, international law, and our treaty obligations.

  • Stand against any illegal MAGA Regime implementation of this strategy

  • Challenge any legislation, that implements this  MAGA strategy.

  • Demand public hearings to challenge tthis MAGA National Security Strategy. If Republicans refuse to allow hearings, hold your own unofficial hearings

Background

Mandated by the National Security Act of 1947, the National Security Strategy (NSS) is a comprehensive statement of worldwide interests, objectives, and plans for US security policy that the president sends to Congress at least once in each term. The report must describe the nation's major threats, national interests, and the broad approach for using military, diplomatic, economic, and other tools of power.

The NSS is not a binding statute or regulation, nor does it have force of law. Rather it is supposed to be a policy-guidance document for planning and budgeting that shapes the more detailed defense and diplomacy strategies, military plans, and regional policies, that are jointly established and implemented by Congress, the president, State and Defense Departments – all in conformance with the Constitution, treaty obligations, and legislated statutes and funding appropriations.

But in an era of a wannabe king, a Congress controlled by a sycophantic Republican Party, and a highly-partisan Supreme Court determined to bestow unprecedented Unitary-Executive powers on the presidency, the NSS may become a decree for unilateral action and military intervention in foreign nations in violation of the War Powers Act and international law and treaty. Venezuela, for example.

While the MAGA Regime proclaims their new National Security Strategy as an "America First" strategy, it's mainly a polemic screed rehashing MAGA dogma, grievances, accusations, theories, and base-building rhetoric. But peeking through its pages are the bones of defense and foreign policies that:

  1. Envisions a return to the 1900s colonial-era of "gunboat diplomacy" in Latin America and the Caribbean. For example, in what it refers to as "a Trump Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine," it instructs that: "The National Security Council will immediately begin a robust interagency process to task agencies, supported by our Intelligence Community’s analytical arm, to identify strategic points and resources in the Western Hemisphere with a view to their protection and joint development with regional partners."

  2. Prioritizes private corporate and crony profit over democratic principles. "The United States will prioritize commercial diplomacy, to strengthen our own economy and industries, … The terms of our agreements, especially with those countries that depend on us most and therefore over which we have the most leverage, must be sole-source contracts for our companies." (Strip away the patriotic rhetoric, and on the streets of Queens NY this would be understood as a new version of the old protection racket.)

As summed up by one N.Y. Times observer, "The world as seen from the White House is a place where America can use its vast powers to make money."

Secondarily, the new NSS also envisions policies that:

  • Support and nurture authoritarian rulers while denigrating democracies.

  • Concede power to Putin, and abandon Ukraine to become a Russian vassal state and American economic protectorate.

  • Carve up the planet into spheres of influence to be ruled by the U.S, China, and Russia.
