We appreciate all the investigative work the Department of Justice has conducted under your leadership to bring to justice and prosecute the individuals involved with the January 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol, as summarized in your report on the one-year anniversary of that attack.
I am writing to you today to remind you and your colleagues at the DoJ that this was a highly planned and carefully orchestrated attack on our democracy and not just a physical attack on the US Capitol. I am urging you to pursue with vigor the investigation of all those who planned these attacks, including former president Trump and his close cronies and political henchmen, and prosecute them for their actions during and after the 2020 elections.
Former President Trump, as evidenced by public recordings, has been directly involved in attacking the integrity of US elections, which as you are aware is a federal crime. As such, I ask you to prosecute former president Trump to the fullest extent permitted by law and not delay or deny such prosecutions out of concerns that they would be perceived as politically motivated. The mob attack led by the former president was a political attack and your job is to prevent such events from happening again.
