Bay resistance is working with pico and Faith in Action East Bay to pass AB2465, the No Tax Dollars for Family Separation Act, authored by Assemblymember Liz Ortega of San Leandro. This act would bar any company that has a contract with ICE from receiving any contract, grant, subsidy, or tax benefit from the state of California.
The bill passed the state Assembly a few weeks ago. We are now experiencing a potential roadblock in the Senate. The bill is scheduled for a hearing at the Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee on Tuesday, June 24th. The chair of that committee, State Senator Jerry McNerney of Modesto, has expressed reservations about the bill. If he does not vote yes it will likely die in committee.
If this bill passes and the governor signs it, it will have national implications, as other states might well be inspired to adopt similar legislation. We urge everyone, regardless of whether you are in Senator McNerney's district, to call his Capitol office as soon as possible at (916) 651-4005 and express support for the bill.
