Summary

Numerous reports of inhumane conditions, medical neglect, mistreatment, and sexual violence in ICE detention underscore the need for greater transparency and oversight.

State Senator Lena Gonzalez has introduced SB423 to the California State Senate.  SB423 would expand the California Public Records Act to require local agencies to disclose, upon request, audio recordings and related records concerning calls for emergency services at private detention facilities, including reports of rape, assault and medical emergencies.

Without passage of bills like this it will only become more difficult to build cases and prove these conditions exist.

SB423 is now in the State Senate Judiciary committee and needs our support.

Please contact Senator Wiener to urge him to support SB423 as one step to address and potentially resolve this difficulty of documenting the atrocities suffered in our ICE concentration camps.

Please vote YES on and support SB 423.

Background

Since last January, the federal government has shut down programs meant to safeguard detainees. The private companies running the ICE concentration camps can and do refuse to release internal incident reports, emergency call logs or security records. Medical and criminal emergencies suffered by detainees in California’s ICE concentration camps are not being addressed and lawyers and others trying to document the incidents are unable to access the information necessary to build a case. Support  SB423, the California Senate bill dedicated to safeguarding detainees in ICE detention centers in California.

SB423 is now in the Senate Judiciary Committee. One member of that committee is our Senator Scott Wiener. Please call or write to him to make sure that he votes to support this important bill.
