A war with Iran – yet another endless conflict – will be a disaster for America, the peoples of the Middle East, the world economy, and possibly the global climate crisis. I urge you to do everything in your power to prevent such a war.
[Optional: If you want to go into greater detail, please include some or all of the following specifics:]
Thank you for including repeal of the 2001 AUMF in the “Minibus” defense appropriation (HR.2740).
Please support the Prevention of Unconstitutional War with Iran Act (HR.2354) and also the Repeal of the Authorization for Use of Military Force (H.R.1274).
Please support Rep. Lee's amendment opposing use of force against Iran in the National Defense Authorization Act (HR.2500).
Please use your legislative authority and your public influence to enforce full compliance with the War Powers Act and demand U.S. adherence to international law and the United Nations Charter.
Please call for congressional hearings to investigate the truthfulness of the Administration’s claims regarding Iran and uncover to what degree (if any) they are influenced by personal political or financial ties to anti-Iran nations such as Saudi Arabia, UAE, and others.
Background:
There is no question that the Iranian government is a repressive, theocratic oligarchy aggressively committed to imposing and spreading a repugnant and misogynist fundamentalist ideology on its own citizens and throughout the Muslim world. But the current confrontation between Washington and Tehran has been almost entirely provoked by right-wing Republicans, Trump, and his allies and cronies for their own political and economic benefit.
Trump unilaterally pulled out of the nuclear weapons agreement that Iran was honoring and re-imposed sanctions to cripple their economy. He and his accomplices are using half-truths, distortions, and outright lies to spread fear and misinformation in the same way that the Bush II administration tricked congress and the American people into supporting a disastrous invasion of Iraq for which we are all still suffering the consequences. Now they are deliberately trying to provoke a military conflict.
National Security Adviser John Bolton is the leading advocate for war against Iran. He was an architect of the Iraq War which failed to bring peace, democracy, and prosperity to the Iraqi people, failed to stabilize the Mid-East, failed to contain the spread of fundamentalist terrorism and failed to make us more secure – in fact, it resulted in just the opposite. Now he and his partner Secretary of State Pompeo are at it again, this time deliberately engineering a war with Iran. A war that could prove to be far bloodier, far more costly, and far more catastrophic to the environment and the world economy than the Iraq debacle.
Bolton is well-known for his extreme right-wing ideology and is the former chair of the shadowy Gateway Institute that promotes Islamaphobia. Pompeo, a former head of the CIA, has in the past argued for massive U.S. military strikes against Iran in order to overthrow their government.
