Background

Early in the Trump Administration, he corrupted the US Digital Service by replacing it with a fake department called the “Department of Government Efficiency,” headed by billionaire Elon Musk, and tasking DOGE with stealing our data and destroying our government from the inside.

Normally, government databases are firewalled from each other so they can only be used for their intended purposes. Trump’s DOGE thieves have been breaching these firewalls and pooling the data for purposes unknown.

Investigative journalist Julia Angwin has written an opinion essay in the New York Times describing Trump’s plan to create a master surveillance database with information on every United States resident. This database could be used to track people that Trump wants to get revenge on or “punish”, such as protesters and other dissidents.

They have snatched personal data about residents of the United States from dozens of federal databases, including databases managed by Social Security, the IRS, and the Department of Health and Human Services (the Department that oversees Medicare and Medicaid), and are combining it all into one big database at the Department of Homeland Security—exactly as privacy advocates warned about back when DHS was first created.

A database like this can be queried to get information about you, your financial assets, your medical history, etc. They can also run queries to look for groups of people with specific characteristics. For example, they could look for people who have immigration cases pending who are from Guatemala and live in Boston.

In the current lawsuits against DOGE, they’ve been evasive about what happens with data that DOGE thieves have already stolen. And even if you fully trust Trump’s Department of Homeland Security to use this terrifying list responsibly, any database like this can be stolen—especially when it’s already been cracked open by intruders like the thieves from DOGE.

Hence the importance of Congress using its power of the purse to bust the DOGE data-theft ring once and for all.
