AB 49 was introduced as part of a broader effort to safeguard immigrant communities in light of intensified deportation measures under the Trump administration. Previously, federal guidelines designated schools as “sensitive locations,” making them largely off-limits for routine immigration enforcement. However, in January 2025, the Trump administration revoked these protections, allowing immigration officers greater access to schools and other community spaces.
