Thank you for supporting a War Powers Act resolution to rein in the MAGA regime's unnecessary and reckless war on Iran. We know it was blocked by Republicans.
We urge you to continue opposing this war with every means at your disposal – clearly, plainly, and strongly. We also urge you to initiate immediate investigations into how Trump's abrupt decision to attack Iran was made, and how much of that decision was based on the prospect of fossil-fuel profits.
Background
Article I, Section 8, Clause 11, of the U.S. Constitution says: "Congress shall have Power … To declare war, … "
For all of our history up through World War II, wars were always formally declared by Congress at the request of the president – after appropriate debate. (Though, of course, the hundreds of 'hostilities' and 'expeditions' to conquer and seize Native American land were never formally declared by Congress and were instead initiated by the president, local military commanders and governments, or simply local mobs.) Since WWII, all wars and military actions – Korea, Vietnam, Panama, Iraq, etc, etc, – have been initiated by the White House, occasionally with some vague congressional resolution, often not even with that. The result has been a series of military adventures ranging from shameful and dismal to utterly disastrous.
While we in no way support or accept the religious tyranny of the Iranian government against its own people -- particularly women -- or its incitement and export of terrorism against neighboring nations, the MAGA regime's unilateral war on Iran is unnecessary, reckless, unconstitutional, and corrupt. We have proven time and again that we cannot bomb people into democracy, democracy can only arise from within and below. Trump's claim that he is motivated by a democratic impulse is ludicrous on its face. As in the past, so too in the present, his actions are always in service of his personal greed for money, power, and self-aggrandizement.
Europe relies on natural gas for home heating and power generation. The bulk of that gas used to come from Russia, but the sanctions imposed after it invaded Ukraine left Europe desperately seeking supplies. That resulted in increased energy consumer costs and higher cartel profits. Europe then turned to natural gas from the Persian Gulf that must be shipped through the Strait of Hormuz – which is now largely closed due to Trump's military adventure.
That Persian Gulf gas field (known as South Pars/North Dome) is the largest in the world, larger than all other gas fields combined. Half is owned and controlled by Qatar, the other half by Iran. Plans are underway to build pipelines for the European market from the Pars field across Iran, Iraq, Syria, Turkey, or Lebanon. The sale of that gas, and the building and managing of those pipelines, will be hugely profitable to whoever is awarded the contracts. Did these geopolitical economic and financial factors and opportunities influence the abrupt decision to wage war on Iran? The world wonders.
