I’m calling to urge Governor Newsom to sign AB 1930 and AB 1876. It’s very important to me that in California, transgender people, including transgender kids, are able to safely access medically necessary healthcare without fear so that they can thrive. Thank you.
Context
It’s time to call Governor Newsom about some more pro-LGBTQ bills. In the past he has wavered on his support of transgender people specifically, so it’s important he hear from many of us that we want California to be a safe place where trans people, including trans kids, can thrive.
Background
Gender affirming care, especially for youth, continues to be under threat nationally, even though it’s safe, effective, and medically necessary. California has taken some steps to protect it, but there’s more to do. The Trump administration is currently trying to use subpoenas to intimidate providers, patients and their families, and has also taken away federal funding.
Given this landscape, LGBTQ advocacy orgs have sponsored AB 1930 and AB 1876. These bills have now passed both chambers of the California legislature and are headed to the Governor’s desk. He must sign them by the end of September.
AB 1930: Helps protect people who seek legally protected gender affirming care and reproductive care in California. Requires providers to alert the California Attorney General when they intend to comply with a subpoena or request for information about these patients.
AB 1876: Codifies non-discrimination protections of the (federal) Affordable Care Act into California law, and explicitly includes gender identity and intersex characteristics. Helps prevent insurance companies from canceling, denying, or limiting care, or overly burdening specific people based on protected characteristics.
