I’m calling to ask the Governor to drop the wildfire liability package plan he has announced, right at the end of the current legislative session, which would cut the cost of wildfires for profit-making utility companies. We need to make utilities fully accountable, not give them a break when they are negligent.

Background

As you may know, California's investor-owned utilities, Pacific Gas & Electric, Southern California Edison (SCE) and San Diego Gas and Electric, saw profits rise last year. Meanwhile, Californians are paying the second-highest electricity rates in the country, in large part because of fire costs that are the utilities' fault. Just last week, Cal Fire and the LA Fire Department found SCE responsible for the January 2025 Eaton Fire that killed 19 people in Altadena.  We must put financial pressure on the utilities to make a business case for their stockholders that they must pay what it costs to prevent more of these disastrous fires.
