My name is __________. I am a constituent, and my zip code is _______. I am a member of Indivisible SF.
I would like you to support redistricting California, because our democracy is at stake, and we need to use every tool we have to protect it.
[ Optional: add why this is important to you ]
Background
Trump has realized that his agenda is so incredibly unpopular that he’ll lose the house in the 2026 election. Rather than adjusting his policies to something less racist, anti-LGBTQ, and pro-billionaire, he’s instead instructed Republican Governors to create more house seats by gerrymandering their states so he’ll continue to have a legislative branch that lets him get away with anything.
We can’t allow the Republicans to steal the next election. California eliminated gerrymandering by drawing legislative boundaries through a bipartisan committee. While we want to end political gerrymandering and have independent re-districting nationwide, current plans for a mid-decade gerrymandering in Republican states is an existential emergency for our democracy in 2026 and 2028. Our democracy itself is under attack, and our best defense is a strong offense.
Governor Newsom has proposed a constitutional amendment that would temporarily suspend the independent committee until the next census in 2030. This would allow the Democratic legislature to counter the gerrymandering that they’re currently planning in Texas by redistricting California to create additional Democratic seats, thus preventing the Republicans from stealing the House. In order for this to happen, it requires a two-thirds vote from both the California Assembly and the Senate, and then support from the public in a special election in November. The deadline for calling this election is August 22nd — we need our state representatives to support it.
Call State Senator Wiener, and your Assemblymember (Haney or Stefani) and tell them that we need to perform mid-decade redistricting in California!
