AB 49 was introduced as part of a broader effort to safeguard immigrant communities in light of intensified deportation measures under the Trump administration. Previously, federal guidelines designated schools as “sensitive locations,” making them largely off-limits for routine immigration enforcement. However, in January 2025, the Trump administration revoked these protections, allowing immigration officers greater access to schools and other community spaces.

Given the abduction of immigrants and citizens of color, including children, in the state of California, these brave acts by teachers and leaders at SFUSD should be supported and applauded.
