Background
In a unanimous vote, the Board of Supervisors passed an ordinance on February 24th that amends the Administrative Code to strictly control how City-owned property can be used, generally prohibiting any use without City authorization except for uses the public has traditionally been allowed to do without permission. It bars City officials and employees from approving uses of City property that would disrupt City operations or discourage people from accessing City services, unless the use clearly furthers a City purpose. Most importantly, it also clarifies that civil immigration enforcement is not considered a legitimate City purpose, meaning City property cannot be authorized for that use. Finally, it allows the City Attorney to bring legal actions against anyone who uses City property for unlawful or unauthorized purposes.
