Lives Are At Stake: Tell Governor Newsom California’s Budget Must Protect LGBTQ People

Call your Governor during business hours.

Call Script

I'm calling because it's extremely important to me that Governor Newsom support four budget items that will protect LGBTQ+ people in California from the federal government's cruelty.

  • $26 million for transition-related healthcare, and stabilizing existing providers

  • $30 million to continue funding Stop the Hate programs, which support survivors of hate incidents

  • $30 million to support LGBTQ+ community centers throughout the state

  • $5 million to fund specialized crisis hotline services for LGBTQ+ youth, also known as ‘Press 3’

Again, lives are on the line. It's extremely important to me that the Governor approve these budget items to protect LGBTQ people. Thank you.”

Background

Nationally, LGBTQ people are in danger from both the federal government and red states. However, some of the Trump administration’s bullying can even hit California.

California has an opportunity to be a safe haven, but we need to step up in our state budget (deadline: June 30!).

LGBTQ families have been fleeing egregious anti-LGBTQ legislation in red states. The Trump administration has unleashed a deluge of cruel federal actions, like taking away LGBTQ suicide hotline services. Determined to attack LGBTQ people everywhere, including California, the administration is also threatening federal funding for transition-related healthcare, especially for youth. We have already seen hospitals right here in the Bay Area cut care just from the threats alone. (One reversed course after protests, showing that we have power!)

California is thought of as a safe blue state, but we have to fight to make it so. We must be a safe haven not only for LGBTQ Californians, but also LGBTQ families who arrive here after fleeing red states.

How we can fight back

LGBTQ people and organizations have fought to get lifesaving budget items in California’s massive (over $300B) state budget to help protect people from these attacks. Now we MUST get Governor Newsom to approve them. He has been blatantly wavering on support for the LGBTQ community, so we need to send a message loud and clear that we're watching.

These are our neighbors, friends, coworkers, family members, and children.
