Call Script

My name is __________. I am a constituent, and my zip code is _______. I am a member of Indivisible SF.

I urge the Senator to immediately initiate and organize action in the Democratic Caucus to remove Sen. Schumer and Sen. Durbin from their leadership positions.

I also urge the Senator to publicly call for Sens. Schumer and Durbin to resign from leadership voluntarily.

Schumer and Durbin failed the American people and Democratic voters, and ruined the reputation of the Democratic party, by allowing our healthcare to become unaffordable at a time when so many are struggling.

Background

At ISF, we hold Senate Minority Leader Schumer and Senate Minority Whip Durbin responsible for the shocking capitulation of Senate Democrats on the government shutdown.

We demand that our Senators work to remove them from leadership.

As a democratic body, the Democratic Senate Conference has the authority to remove or elect new leadership by majority vote. We are asking our Senators to bring a letter to the Conference proposing the removal of Senators Schumer and Durbin from leadership, and enact those changes. They will need 24 votes to do this, which we are confident they can find.

ISF commits to continuing to ask Senators Schiff and Padilla to act to remove Schumer and Durbin from leadership, and watch their progress on this issue.

Both the Senate Minority Leader and Senate Minority Whip are responsible for Senate Democrats using their power to serve Americans. Senators Schumer and Durbin failed in their roles as leaders. They were either unable, or intentionally refused, to keep the Democratic caucus together. After allowing the government shutdown to proceed for weeks, they allowed the Senate Democrats to fold to a deal offered early in the process. The result was 40 days of pointless suffering for millions of regular Americans, and a future of unaffordable healthcare for them and countless others.

Democrats were refusing their votes on the Continuing Resolution to ensure that healthcare would be funded for millions of Americans. On Sunday night on Nov 9, the Democratic caucus 7 was undermined by Democrats (Kaine - VA, Shaheen - NH, Durbin - IL, Hassan - NH, Cortez-Masto - NV, Rosen -NV)  and 1 independent (King - ME), and ended up approving cloture on a “deal” that does not address Democratic demands on healthcare. In fact, it was the same deal that Republicans offered weeks ago.

By surrendering so utterly and completely at a moment of their maximum leverage and momentum, Senate Democrats teach Trump and his cadre an important lesson: do enough damage, and your opponents will buckle. This is an extremely dangerous lesson for Trump to learn as he ramps up his attacks on blue states and cities and prepares to steal the midterm elections. Because of this surrender, our democracy is more imperiled now than it was before.

While the above seven Democrats and an independent ultimately cast the No votes, we believe it was the responsibility of Senators Schumer and Durbin to prevent this situation.  They failed their constituents and they failed Americans. They must step down.
