President Biden:

We have all watched white supremacist mass shootings escalate over the past decade. Congress has tried to pass voting-rights legislation that would make it possible for the peaceful majority of Americans to vote enablers of violent white supremacists out of office and limit their access to automatic weapons. We will have to climb over the hundreds of obstacles Republican legislatures have erected in order to vote them out in 2022.

In the meantime, we endorse and urge you to implement the NAACP's Buffalo Response Plan and Policy Recommendations. And we need you to advance those goals through Executive Actions.

  • White supremacists thrive on freely circulating racist disinformation, so it was disturbing to see your administration intimidated by Republicans into pausing the DHS Disinformation Governance Board. We need you to restart that Board ASAP.

  • This is the second anniversary of George Floyd’s murder. Please sign the Executive Order on Police Reform that you have been discussing.

  • Give the Department of Justice the authority and resources to set national standards for policing and enforcing the nation’s civil rights laws when they are violated by police officers.

Attorney General Garland :

We appreciate the work your Civil Rights Division has done to enforce our civil rights laws. We need you to extend that to include preventing hate crimes by aggressively engaging social media platforms on the issues of mis- and disinformation that create spaces where communities of hate target young people. Black, Brown, Asian, Muslim, and Jewish communities provide revenue to these platforms, and you should publically call those platforms to account when they enable hate speech that poses a clear threat of inciting violence against communities of color and belief.

Background

Following the racially motivated act of domestic terrorism in Buffalo, New York, that left ten people dead, the NAACP released a comprehensive plan to combat white supremacy and hate crimes that focused on key strategies a majority of Americans support, in these three areas:

  • Social Media and Corporate Accountability

  • Gun Violence Prevention

  • Police Reform

We agree with NAACP President Derrick Johnson that our government needs to focus on “preventing the next attack. We need to act. Democracy and white supremacy cannot coexist, and will never coexist. It's one or the other. We're fighting for democracy."
