My name is __________. I am a constituent, and my zip code is _______. I am a member of Indivisible SF.
I urge my Assemblymember to support and cosponsor SB271, which will remove the requirement that candidates for Sheriff must have law enforcement experience. I also urge my Assemblymember to support AB 118, the reintroduced CRISIS act, which funds community organizations to provide nonviolent alternatives to police response.
Background
Black Lives Matter. Enacting legislation that protects BIPOC communities and impoverished communities from police violence is a local matter. Newly introduced SB271 will allow people without police service histories to run for Sheriff, opening the door to more equitable and safe policing and making institutional racism less entrenched in Sheriffs’ departments. AB118 is the reintroduced CRISES Act, which will fund alternatives to violent police responses. CRISES-style programs have been in use in cities around the nation and have proven successful. Let’s fight for these changes at home.
