Background
Our Governor Gavin Newsom is not doing enough to protect tenants affected by COVID from eviction. Tell Newson not to fund evictions of renters who have lost their income, and support protections for renters now.
From Tenants Together, a statewide coalition of local tenant organizations Evictions have caused over 400,000 COVID infections and 10,000 deaths nationwide, and 12 million renters will owe an average of $6,000 in back rent by January 2021. Two million California households have reported "little or no confidence" in their ability to pay the next month's rent.
In August of last year, we passed AB 3088 which prohibited evictions due to non-payment of rent, which is set to expire on January 31. AB 15, authored by Asm. David Chiu (AD17) and co-sponsored by SF reps Asm. Phil Ting (AD19) and Senator Scott Weiner (SD11), will extend this provision through 2021. AB 16, authored by Chiu, will address the nearly $3.7 billion of debt owed by renters in CA.
Call Gavin Newsom to protect tenants and support the passing AB15 and AB16!
