Call the SF office first, but try the DC office if you can’t get through. If you get voicemail, hang up and try a few more times to talk to a real person. Don’t give up! Short direct messages are most effective. Hate the phone? Resistbot is your friend.

I urge you to subpoena the director of the GSA, Emily Murphy to testify to Congress regarding her refusal to initiate the official transition of presidential power to President-elect Biden as our democracy demands.

Background

It’s official: Joe Biden is the President-elect. The transition from one administration to another is a huge undertaking, requiring months of cooperation and millions of dollars so that a new president can be ready to govern on Inauguration Day. It has been that way for many decades, but the Trump administration is set on disrupting even this crucial democratic norm.

Emily Murphy, the head of the General Services Administration, the federal agency that runs presidential transitions, is stalling the process. To date, she has refused to release the $9.9 million in computer systems and money for salaries and administrative support for the mammoth undertaking of setting up a new government. Until this happens, the Biden transition team cannot work.

The GSA not authorizing a transition means Joe Biden has no access to office space at federal agencies, no work with the Office of Government Ethics to run financial disclosures or conflict-of-interest checks for appointees, and no access to civil servants. Given that we are still in a pandemic, a mess that Joe Biden will inherit on January 20th, it is absolutely imperative his team have access to all federal government resources now. We have had presidential transitions before between competing parties, and Murphy's action is virtually unprecedented. She must be made to testify in front of Congress immediately.
