Indivisible SF endorses the UESF slate for San Francisco School Board: Virginia Cheung, Ryan Hazelton, and Reina Tello.
The San Francisco School Board has become a six-figure political battleground. GrowSF alone spent more than $220,000 in June, and its current PAC is again taking five-figure checks from tech and venture-capital figures. Many of these donors have no relationship or history with SFUSD.
Strong public schools require more than good intentions: they need enough teachers, enough support staff, an enrollment system that takes families’ very real constraints seriously, and language programs that support the diversity that makes us San Francisco.
Virginia Cheung wants fully staffed classrooms, paid pathways into teaching, more special-ed and language-program teachers, and an enrollment system families can actually plan around. She has proposed paid credentialing and guaranteed SFUSD placement in high-need fields, plus fixing payroll so educators don't go unpaid.
Ryan Hazelton wants SFUSD to finally replace its confusing school lottery with a more predictable neighborhood-based system—and publicly report whether it's hitting its deadlines. He also supports fixing payroll and negotiating teacher contracts early enough that it doesn't take another strike to reach an agreement.
Reina Tello wants smaller, manageable classes, more special-education support, adequate prep time for teachers and paras, and a hiring process that doesn't take six months. She also wants language and special-ed programs available across the city instead of concentrated in a handful of schools.
Every candidate in this race wants better outcomes for San Francisco's kids and families. Where candidates differ is in their beliefs about why our public schools are struggling and what we should do about it. Indivisible SF finds that Cheung, Hazelton, and Tello's focus on investing in the people and systems that make public education work is most consistent with our values.
