Senate is now in Recess: Here's how we did
After a contentious Senate session, we’ve faced some expected but serious losses. But we’ve also managed to hold strong and prevent some of the worst attacks on our communities and on our democracy.
1. We stalled the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). This 500+ page bill is filled with provisions that we oppose. Some of the worst are a huge increase in defense spending, failure to limit the illegal Iran War, and the integration of U.S-Israel defense integration with circumvention of congressional oversight. Additionally the House version of the bill included SAVE Act language. The House has passed multiple versions of the NDAA, but it remains blocked in the Senate by Democratic filibuster, despite lobbying efforts on our Senators.
It is certain that come September the MAGA regime will renew its effort to pass the NDAA in the Senate and we will need to fiercely oppose it in its current form.
2. We stopped the SAVE Act. This highly-partisan voter-suppression bill has passed the House multiple times in various versions. Republicans tried to pass it as an add-on to the NDAA, but we also blocked the NDAA. The bill remains blocked in the Senate by Democratic filibuster. A special thank you to our Senators for holding strong to prevent stripping voting rights away from millions of Americans!Currently, an effort is being made to try to pass the SAVE Act as part of the next budget reconciliation process, so we’ll need to fight that too when Congress is back in session.
3. We stalled the CLARITY Act, a crypto-enabling bill, in the Senate, and according to the leads of the Indivisible coalition against it, it has little chance of resurfacing. This bill attempted to benefit crypto companies and billionaires under the guise of being a regulatory bill. This is an issue which Democrats have wavered on before, so we are proud that we were able to inform our Senators and make sure they unified against this bill.
