Act Now—Tell your HR department about May 1 Walkout

This action should be customized to your workplace.  In some businesses, emailing the VP of HR may be the natural path; in others, you might know someone in the HR department who is a natural person to receive this message—or might be the right person to ask about how to get this message heard.  A phone call that leverages an existing relationship is often the best way to get traction.

Subject: May 1 is an important day

Hi _________,

I’m sure you’re aware that political tensions are running high currently.  The latest No Kings rallies around the country and around the Bay were the biggest yet.  No matter what political opinions the company or its leadership holds, it would be wise to be aware of actions that employees may be considering.

The organizing forces behind the No Kings rallies are now focused on May 1 as the next major action day, calling for a “no school, no work, no shopping” walkout.  May 1 is recognized as Labor Day in most countries.  (The US opted to choose its own date for Labor Day, as the May date was initially associated with the Communist/Socialist movements.)  The organizers are encouraging businesses to close, and individuals to take a day of “nonparticipation” in commercial activities altogether.

The company may not wish to close for the day, but it should consider that there may be employees, maybe many, who are aware of this call to action.  Acknowledging the planned day of action/walkout in advance, and inviting employees to follow their conscience in planning time off so that the business can best plan for the day might help the business—not only in the literal planning for that day’s staffing, but also in showing respect for employees wanting to live their values.

Thanks for considering,
