I’m calling to ask Assemblyman Ting to vote YES on the state budget item to compensate survivors of involuntary sterilization under California’s eugenics law from 1909 to 1979. Survivors of this horrific law deserve justice.
Context
Throughout the early 20th century, as many as 32 states had eugenics programs. California was one of them, forcibly sterilizing 20,000 people. This program was supported by doctors, politicians, and Supreme Court justices. On the sole recommendation of a doctor, people who were deemed “feeble minded” or were cared for in institutions were subjected to sterilization.
The victims of this policy are old now, and the least the California government can do is extend compensation to them for this horrific abuse.
A measure to extend this compensation is on the budget appearing before the Assembly, and our Assemblyman Phil Ting is a key vote. Call him to tell him to vote YES on the measure.
This Week's State and Local Call Scripts:
A slate of rooftop solar-related bills are in danger of being killed by our legislature. Call your Assemblymember, Assembly Speaker, and Governor, and tell them you are disappointed in their actions so far and ask them to support these bills.
A slate of rooftop solar-related bills are in front of committees in both the Assembly and the Senate, and they urgently need your support.
Our big utility companies and the Governor rammed through a state bill that will force everyone, especially lower middle class folks, to pay an exorbitant baseline fee for energy. Tell your Assemblymember to repeal the provision allowing this.
AB 538 threatens big changes with uncertain consequences to our energy grid. In the absence of a specific plan to judge on its merits, the Assembly should not move this bill forward.
AB 642 is a surveillance bill that puts our communities in danger. Tell Asm. Haney to oppose it, and Asm. Ting, the author, to pull it.
Black Lives Matter. Enacting legislation that protects BIPOC communities and impoverished communities from police violence is a local matter.
ACA 6, the “Free the Vote Act,” is heading to the Senate floor this week, and needs a 2/3 vote to pass! ACA 6 would restore voting rights to every person who has completed their prison term in California. Tell State Senator Scott Wiener to vote YES on it.
AB-2054: The CRISES Act, recently sent to the California Senate, would fund community alternatives to police crisis response. The CRISES Act directs the California Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) to administer $16 million in grants to community organizations in at least ten counties over the next three years. Call State Senator Wiener to support this bill!
