I’m calling to ask Assemblyman Ting to vote YES on the state budget item to compensate survivors of involuntary sterilization under California’s eugenics law from 1909 to 1979. Survivors of this horrific law deserve justice.
Context
Throughout the early 20th century, as many as 32 states had eugenics programs. California was one of them, forcibly sterilizing 20,000 people. This program was supported by doctors, politicians, and Supreme Court justices. On the sole recommendation of a doctor, people who were deemed “feeble minded” or were cared for in institutions were subjected to sterilization.
The victims of this policy are old now, and the least the California government can do is extend compensation to them for this horrific abuse.
A measure to extend this compensation is on the budget appearing before the Assembly, and our Assemblyman Phil Ting is a key vote. Call him to tell him to vote YES on the measure.
