I'm calling to ask that you prevent ICE from circumventing AB32 by creating new contracts for private prisons and immigrant detention space in San Francisco and in California. Recently we've heard that ICE is scrambling to lock in new contracts before AB32 kicks in - I'm asking that you do everything in your power to stop them.
Background
AB32 is a newly-passed state law in California that makes significant steps to abolish private prisons, and makes it much harder for ICE to detain people in private prisons in California. The law kicks in in a few weeks, and ICE seems dead-set on getting around it. An article in SF Chronicle from Monday alleged that ICE is trying to circumvent AB32 by searching for contracts for new private detention space, including in San Francisco.
