Push for Comprehensive Soil Testing of SF Shipyard-Hunter's Point
Mayor London Breed
SF Office Number: (415) 554-6141
Call Script
I am calling to ask Mayor Breed to push for comprehensive soil testing of radiation levels in Bayview-Hunters Point. Experts are saying that theNavy's proposed air tests are insufficient and that proper tests would need to include soil samples. I expect our new Mayor to stand up for her constituents’ health and safety.
Background
The EPA declared the SF Shipyard-Hunter’s Point a Superfund site in 1989 and subsequently the US government has spent more than $1 billion on cleanup. It was recently discovered that cleanup for at least two parcels of this land have been fraudulently conducted, with contaminated soil from the site secretly shipped to landfills all over the state. After public outcry, Nancy Pelosi negotiated a plan with the Navy to retest part of the SF Shipyard. However experts say that the Navy’s proposed tests may not detect additional radioactive contamination underground.
