Prologis, a logistics real estate company, is proposing to build a production, distribution, and repair (PDR) center in the northwest part of the Bayview, at Toland St. and McKinnon Ave. The project has garnered support from several city agencies and other organizations for the jobs it would bring. In addition, the developers have promised a variety of ecologically mitigating measures, including rooftop solar. But increased truck traffic is an inescapable aspect of the project, and that will bring inevitable toxins like PM2.5 particulates from diesel exhaust and vehicle tires, impacting a community already overburdened by environmentally caused diseases like asthma and cancer. The current draft environmental impact report (DEIR) has a range of serious omissions; for example, it considers emissions from diesel trucks to not be a problem, since they were scheduled to be converted to electric by 2050. In the light of recent Federal policy revisions this is wildly over-optimistic. The city Planning Commission is scheduled to hold a hearing on June 5 to review the DEIR, and a coalition of Bayview neighborhood groups, together with supporters from around the city, will be on hand to protest the shortcomings of the report and the project as a whole. They would welcome your support.
