SF Public Press: What You Don't Know About Local Government Can Hurt You

  • Kanbar Performing Arts Center, Girls Chorus 44 Page Street San Francisco, CA, 94102 United States (map)

Join the SF Public Press for “What You Don’t Know About Local Government Can Hurt You” for an eye-opening conversation about government secrecy at the state and local level.

Miranda Spivack specializes in stories about government accountability and transparency — or lack thereof. She also writes about urban and rural development, and secret deals that often are involved.

For 20 years, Spivack was a reporter and editor at The Washington Post, where she broke stories about how local governments failed in their responsibility to be transparent. Her reporting led to changes in the way some jurisdictions worked with developers and government contractors. She continues to write about development trends for The New York Times.

Her series “State Secrets,” for Reveal from The Center for Investigative Reporting, was honored with the Sunshine Award from the Society for Professional Journalists. Spivack’s forthcoming book, “Backroom Deals in Our Backyards: How Government Secrecy Harms our Communities — and the Local Heroes Fighting Back” is scheduled to be published in 2025 by New Press.

Come hear about the underreported rise in secret deal-making between local governments and corporations, and how this threatens our health, safety and democracy.
