I’m calling to ask [MoC] to take every step possible to ensure that Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV) does NOT become the ranking member of the Energy & Natural Resources Committee.
Background
Manchin has the inside track to take over the ranking member slot, currently held by Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-WA). Should Democrats take back the Senate in 2020, the ranking member on the Energy & Natural Resources committee would become chair. Joe Manchin takes money from the oil and gas industry and should not be allowed to legislate the industry he is financed by.
The Green New Deal will die in committee if Sen. Manchin, as ranking member, becomes the Chair. This must not happen. There are several others ahead of him for the post – Cantwell, Wyden, Sanders, Stabenow – but they may not want it. They must either be convinced to accept the responsibility or it should go to Senator Martin Heinrich. Under no circumstances must it go to Manchin.
At a time when we need to address climate change and create a Green New Deal, Sen. Manchin has a terrible record on the environment. He voted to confirm former Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt and recorded a 2010 campaign ad in which he shot a mock copy of the Democrats’ cap-and-trade climate bill.
According to OpenSecrets.org, Manchin’s 2018 re-election campaign received $156,240 from the oil and gas industries. Manchin also reports earnings each year from Enersystems Inc., a coal brokerage company he helped run before entering politics, in his Senate financial disclosures.
Senators should not be financed by the industries that they are supposed to be regulating and legislating.
