Bracing for impacts from Trump Tariffs

The Trump Tariffs are already causing damage, with shipments in American ports beginning to dry up. This will cause higher costs and scarcer goods, with ripple effects comparable to the early-pandemic supply chain shocks of 2020. Let’s dig a little bit into how we can get through what’s coming at a day-to-day level.

What if Trump invokes the Insurrection Act?

Trump May Invoke the 1807 Insurrection Act

On his first day in office last January, wannabe king Trump declared a national emergency on our southern border granting him broad powers to repel a non-existent  "invasion." (In actual fact, the number of illegal border crossings is at an historic low.) Trump's declaration also gave the departments of Defense and Homeland Security 90 days to produce a report recommending that he invoke the Insurrection Act of 1807.

That report has now come due. Trump could invoke the Insurrection Act at any moment.

The Origin of May Day: American unions then set May 1st 1890, as a national day of action for the 8-hour day. Socialists in Europe did the same, declaring May Day to be International Workers Day. San Francisco Stands Up for Science

"Got polio? Me neither. Thanks science!" The signs were nerdy. The labcoats gleamed in the bright afternoon sun. Hundreds, maybe a thousand people gathered in Civic Center Plaza in SF to defend a pillar of our modern world that too many of us take for granted: science.

Trump’s Attorney General Pam Bondi is defunding the police

We were more than a little bit surprised to see Trump’s new attorney general, Pam Bondi, take action to defund local police this week, as part of the Administration’s ideological crusade against sanctuary cities like San Francisco. This isn’t quite what defunding proponents wanted, and we certainly won’t hail her as a racial-justice hero for an action motivated by anti-immigrant ideology. Nonetheless, her move to withhold federal funding for public safety in sanctuary cities does count as defunding local police—an interesting move from someone nominally in law enforcement.
