Write postcards of support to Ukraine

This past Friday we saw a disgraceful, disrespectful and despicable display towards President Zelenskyy by Trump and Vance.

Some folks have already taken action in protest, such as the successful demonstration in Waitsfield, Vermont organized by Indivisible Mad Valley.

Another way you can show that Americans like us don’t support Trump and Vance’s bullying is to write a postcard to President Zelenskyy to uplift his spirit and fortify his determination in doing what is best for his people. Think of it as fan mail—an expression of personal support.

What To Say, And What Not To Say

Important:  We are not directing nor advocating a change in foreign policy. That is illegal under the Logan Act, which prohibits private individuals from lobbying on behalf of the United States. Keep it to expressions of admiration.

Anonymity and content are key. Make it brief without urging a specific action. Avoid mentioning any specific measures or conduct that could be taken by Zelenskyy, by Ukraine, by Trump, or by the United States.  Saying, “you rock, and I wish you well” is OK; “please ignore whatever Trump says” is a directive to a foreign leader, so it’s not OK.
Avoid speaking for America or most Americans, even if you are confident that they would agree.  Instead, speak only for yourself and optionally for people you personally know.  Only discuss sentiments and support of a personal human-to-human nature.

Here are some sample content recommendations:

Example 1: "Damn Trump and his Administration! Our prayers and hearts are with Ukraine!"

Example 2: "This real American stands with Ukraine!  Wishing you swift success defending your homeland!"

Example 3: "Hugs and fist bumps from our whole family!  Much love and support for Ukraine!"

Just like any public comment action, it’s best to use your own words, as long as you stay within the parameters outlined above.

Mailing your expression of support

Here’s how to mail your support:

  1. Address your postcard to the local Ukrainian consulate in SF:

  • Consulate General of Ukraine in San Francisco
530 Bush Street, Suite 402, San Francisco, California, 94108

  1. Sign your letter using your first name only. DO NOT USE YOUR FULL NAME.

  2. For the return address, include your town/city and state only. To protect your identity, do not include your full name or your street address. Providing a town/city and state though will help the Ukrainians see which areas of the United States are responding in favor of Ukrainian support!

Since you’ll be mailing your postcard within the United States, you can use 56¢ First Class postcard stamp, just like when you’re postcarding voters.

Additional ways you can support Ukraine

The government of Ukraine has a website listing ways you can support Ukraine’s defense against Russia’s invasion, including spreading truthful information about the war from trustworthy sources, donating money directly to the Ukrainian military, donating to organizations providing humanitarian aid to survivors and refugees, and more:
