One more reason to flip the House: MAGA Republicans diverting blame to DHS Sec. Mayorkas
President Biden’s Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, has been fulfilling his duties by executing the United States’s immigration and asylum policies. We strongly disagree with those policies; we would rather see them made more welcoming and humane, where they are currently restrictive and often brutal. But changing those policies is the remit of Congress; Sec. Mayorkas’s job is to implement policy as it is.
Yesterday, the xenophobic MAGA Republicans controlling the House of Representatives impeached (on their second attempt) President Biden’s Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas on bogus, trumped-up charges. This is nothing more than scapegoating; rather than have a serious conversation about whether America should be welcoming or paranoid, the MAGA Republicans have decided to point their fingers at the Secretary.
We must assume the MAGA Republicans, who don’t seem to want to do anything productive, will attempt other sham impeachments in the future. Perhaps they’ll impeach the Secretary of the Treasury over the deficit. Perhaps they’ll impeach the Secretary of the Interior over a forest fire. These are not serious people wanting a serious policy conversation; they are vindictive bullies lashing out at people solely for being President Biden’s appointees.
We cannot allow Republicans to use stunts and bad-faith politics to waste time and promote an agenda of fear and exclusion. Prior to this week, we joined Indivisible National and our immigration rights partners in asking our senators to stand against bringing back horrific Trump-era measures. In the days to come, we expect the Senate to quickly try the charges and show their emptiness, but this is still a shameful display by MAGA Republicans.
In order to prevent further sham impeachments and pass legislation that might ensure the safety of immigrants in this country, we must take back the House and hold the Senate. Check our Vote page for ways you can help.
