January 6th Select Committee Public Hearings: June 9–23, 2022

On Thursday, June 9, 2022 at 5 PM Pacific, the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the United States Capitol will air its first public hearing on primetime TV. These hearings will show us far more than what we learned in the second impeachment of Donald John Trump. They will reveal how the events of January 6, 2021 fit into a much broader attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election.

Republican propagandists would like us to believe that the violent attack on our Capitol on January 6 was a singular event—a wild riot by frenzied Trump fans, motivated by sincere concerns about election integrity. We know that this is false. In the weeks before the attack, the Trump legal team launched a desperate flurry of frivolous lawsuits in several states to overturn the election results based on false claims and conspiracy theories. By December 14, 2020, the Trump team had lost 59 such court challenges.

What the Select Committee discovered through its year of investigations is that “as with Watergate, January 6th represents neither a single nor isolated event, but instead a much broader and more multifaceted effort to stop the transfer of power.”  The Committee identified five such facets, and assigned each an investigative team represented by a color. These teams will be reporting their findings in the hearings:

  • GOLD TEAM: Efforts by Trump and close associates to pressure federal, state, and local officials to overturn the election

  • BLUE TEAM: Law enforcement and intelligence agency failures

  • PURPLE TEAM: Domestic extremist groups, QAnon, and online misinformation

  • RED TEAM: Jan. 6 Rally planners and the “Stop the Steal” movement

  • GREEN TEAM: Following the money behind the efforts to overturn the election

Each team’s work is summarized in the Committee’s primer in the References below.

Hearing Schedule, Pacific time:

There will be further hearings. The last hearing in June included a commitment to have more hearings in July. The Committee is not yet finished telling this story to the American people.

The hearings will be shown on most broadcast and cable TV channels, including C-SPAN. The hearings are also streamed live on the Committee’s own YouTube channel and on other major news channels on YouTube, like PBS NewsHour, the Washington Post, and others, so you can watch there too, and catch portions you may have missed. The audio live stream can be accessed through C-SPAN’s free phone app.
