Official Letter: We call on Senator Feinstein to step down from Judiciary Committee Leadership

To: Senator Feinstein

From: Indivisible SF

Date: October 23, 2020

We call on you to step down from your Judiciary Committee leadership role.

While we support your participation in the October 21st Democratic boycott of the Judiciary  Committee's illegitimate vote on the Barrett nomination to the Supreme Court and your  commitment to vote against her confirmation, we are deeply disappointed by your persistent  failure to do anything to delay, obstruct, or procedurally oppose a fundamentally flawed  committee process. We condemn your public statements praising the committee process and  your embrace of Chairman Lindsey Graham. By doing so, you validated an illegitimate,  morally-repugnant, and politically-obscene, packing of the Court with ideologically-driven  Republican partisans.

For five years, Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham, and the Republican Party have ruthlessly  violated Senate rules and norms to politicize the judiciary into a partisan arm that will deny  healthcare to millions of Americans, block the environment and safety regulations we need to  combat global climate catastrophe, overturn Roe v Wade and a woman's right to control her  own body, cripple labor unions, and more.

Republicans aim to use the court to transform government of the people, by the people, and  for the people into an authoritarian rule “Of the CEOs, by the lobbyists, for the wealthy.” Your actions legitimize a power grab that allows them to do so against the wishes of a majority of  Americans and your own constituents.

Your actions do not represent your constituents at Indivisible San Francisco, and we call on  you to step down from your leadership role in the Senate Judiciary Committee.

We are joining NARAL, MoveOn, Demand Justice, Demand Progress, and other groups,  including other Indivisible chapters, in this call.

Now that the committee has violated its own rules to send the Barrett nomination to the full  Senate for confirmation, the last opportunity for you to use procedural maneuvers to delay her confirmation is on the Senate floor. We want you to use parliamentary tools to delay and  obstruct the process – just as Republicans did over and over again during the Obama  administration.
