Defend Transgender Rights Under Siege in Kansas
Last week, licenses, state IDs, and birth certificates of over 1000 Kansas residents were invalidated overnight. With little warning, discrimination against transgender residents had become law. This February, Kansas House Republicans overturned their governor’s veto of senate bill 244, passing a law that invalidates all legal identification differentiating gender and sex at birth. As if that weren’t dehumanizing enough, it forces transgender people to use government facilities (bathrooms, crisis shelters, locker rooms) associated with their assigned sex at birth, threatening serious civil penalties if they don’t cooperate.
The ACLU of Kansas immediately launched a lawsuit against the state, pointing out SB 244’s blatant violation of constitutional protections for autonomy, privacy, equality under the law, due process, and freedom of speech.
Now’s the time to help, before this kind of discriminatory legislation spreads unchecked across the nation. Support the ACLU of Kansas here.
Additionally, if you know a Kansas resident who’s been affected by this law directly, they can get in touch with the ACLU’s defenders here.
